Does your child have hearing loss?
There might be treatments available in the forms of medical technologies.
Early detection and seeking medical treatment at the early stage will have many benefits.
It’s every parent’s dream that their children, the loved ones will grow up healthy and have a bright and successful future. However, according to the World Health Organization, it is unfortunate that 1-5 out of every 1,000 babies are born with hearing loss in one or both ears. Hearing impairment is known to be the most common sensory disability among newborn babies.
As parents, It‘s heartbreaking and disappointing to find out if their newborn has a hearing issue at such a young age, the sense of uncertainties and helplessness will make parents feel lost in their quest of seeking what is the next best step for their children with hearing loss.
According to Prof Dr Tang Ing Ping, an experienced hearing implant surgeon, lecturer and Senior ENT Consultant from University of Malaysia Sarawak, current advances in medical technologies, in the forms of implantable and wearable medical devices, are proven to be effective in allowing children with hearing loss to gain back the ability to hear. Parents with children with hearing loss should seek medical treatment and intervention as early as possible.
“Seeking early treatment and intervention with doctors and audiologist is essential in ensuring good hearing outcomes with these treatments” said Prof Dr Tang Ing Ping.
Although hearing impairment is not a life threatening disease to newborn babies, it is still considered a medical emergency by many, especially ENT specialists like Prof Dr Tang Ing Ping. This is because due to the high level of brain plasticity during this stage, newborn can absorb all language related inputs and stimulations more effectively, giving them a uniquely high ability to learn how to talk or learn how to use language communication. Without normal hearing, this ability to learn language is entirely affected and disrupted, therefore, ensuring a healthy hearing capability is very essential for children to grow and develop normal speech and language capabilities.
Depending on the type and severity of the hearing loss, medical technologies like hearing aids and hearing implant systems are the most reliable solution for babies with hearing loss. In depth audiological and medical assessment should be able to suggest clear options that can provide optimal result. Through re-gained hearing with these medical technologies, it could help the hearing impaired children to learn to listen and speak, and to grow up normally.
Another reminder from Prof Dr Tang Ing Ping, as soon as parents discover that their children may have hearing impairment, it is essential to:
– Seek early consultation from a doctor or audiologist.
– Start early medical and audiological intervention.
– Act early if medical technologies like Hearing Aids & Hearing Implant are suggested.

Having been unable to hear on my left ear since young, implants have been on my wishlist to be able to hear on my both side. Having to always walked on the right side of people have been so frustrating. With this implants on, I have benefit greatly to be able to hear clearly on both side. No more worries of trying to squeeze in to walk on the right side of everyone! Staff was also very helpful in helping me to source for a stronger magnet which I needed badly.
