What is Cochlear Implant ?
Cochlear implant is an electronic device that improves hearing. It can be a choice for people who have severe-to-profound hearing loss from inner-ear damage and can’t hear well with hearing aids.
Although hearing aids are considered the “gold standard” device to start with for people suffering from hearing loss, however there are also limitations when come to its benefits and hearing performance, especially when the hearing loss is at severe-to-profound level. Cochlear implant on the other hand, is meant for severe-to-profound hearing loss, with proven benefits and good hearing performance.
How Does Cochlear Implant Works ?
Cochlear implant sends sounds past the damaged part of the ear straight to the hearing nerve, which is also called the cochlear nerve. For most people with hearing loss that involves the inner ear, the cochlear nerve works. But the nerve endings, called hair cells, in the part of the inner ear called the cochlea, are damaged. By imposing electrical stimulation onto the cochlear nerve, signals are then sent to the brain, processed and perceived as sounds.
Cochlear implants use the audio processor, which is an external device that that pulls in sounds from outside the ear and sends sound signals to a receiver that’s been placed under the skin. Audio processors come in different shapes and wearing options, it can placed behind-the-ear or directly placed on the location of the receiver as a single-unit form.

Cochlear Implants have been very popular in recent years due to its reliability and solid solution for people with severe-to-profound hearing loss, helping people to re-gain hearing and improves their quality of life.
Why Choose Cochlear Implant for your child ?
Children with severe-to-profound hearing loss may be candidates for a cochlear implant even at a very young age. The earlier the cochlear implant is placed, the better the chance that the child will benefit from it. Cochlear implants are suitable for people of all age groups – children and adults. The latest technology in Cochlear implant even allows it to be customized based of the size and length of the recipient’s cochlea, thus further optimising its benefits.
Here are a few benefits of cochlear implant for children:
What Professionals Say About Cochlear Implant ?
Prof Dr Tang Ing Ping, a renowned Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Specialist, who is currently the Head of ENT Department in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), the Senior Consultant at Sarawak General and the visiting surgeon at several other hospitals, locally and abroad. He is very optimistic about the outcome of Cochlear Implant and other Hearing Implant Technologies.
“The invention of Cochlear Implant has allowed professionals like us to again see the hope in helping and ensuring people who are suffering from previously untreatable hearing conditions, to be able to hear and live like a normal hearing person.” Says Prof Dr Tang.
Prof Tang, with his medical teams, has performed several hundred hearing implants locally and abroad, his team in Sarawak General Hospital was the first in Malaysia to perform the Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI), a type of hearing implant that is meant for retro-cochlear hearing loss that could not be helped by Cochlear Implant due to medical and anatomical reasons.
Another advice from Prof Dr Tang Ing Ping: As soon as parents discover that their children may have hearing impairment, it is essential to:
– Seek early consultation from a doctor or audiologist.
– Start early medical and audiological intervention.
– Act early if medical technologies like Hearing Aids & Hearing Implant are suggested.
